Description
Willows are fast-growing large trees, most common in wetlands and along stream banks. Black willow (Salix nigra) is common in NC and is the largest species. Seeds are surrounded by cotton-like hairs that facilitate wind and water dispersal. Pussy willow (Salix discolor) is a smaller species.
Leaves
Narrow (1/2 to 3/4" wide), lanceolate, finely toothed, medium to dark green leaves (3 to 6” long) that taper to elongate tips.
Flowers
Non-showy tiny yellowish-green flowers appear in catkins.
